Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Focus Group?
A focus group is a structured workshop with a group of employees. Focus groups are typically used by Human Resources or management following on from your employee survey to drill down into specific challenges and to brainstorm ideas for improvement.
How Does a Focus Group Work?
During a focus group, a facilitator asks participants verbal, open-ended questions to spur varied and nuanced responses. It’s an environment where attendees are encouraged to speak freely and engage with each other. Observing interactions and nonverbal communications allows the moderator to hone in on what employees are genuinely thinking and feeling.
What is the Purpose of a Focus Group?
Focus groups are a unique research tool used to uncover valuable information while involving employees in the process of decision-making and business solutions in the workplace.
Focus groups are designed to help HR or management;
• Uncover the strengths and weaknesses of the organization and provide actions for addressing or sustaining them.
• Form a more comprehensive picture of how employees feel about the organization through qualitative insights.
• Provide the opportunity to show that employee feedback is valued and that there’s commitment to positive change in the workplace.
Who Can Participate in a Focus Group?
All employees have the opportunity to take part in a focus group. Each group will have a small number of employees to ensure everyone has an opportunity to speak. Employees are encouraged to actively and openly participate in discussions and be respectful of others in the group.
